Our client is seeking a Conservation Works Team on an initial 6 month contract with the possibility of an extension.

Working Hours:

37 Hours per week

Monday - Friday

Pay Rate:

£10.14 p/h

Job Purpose:

To carry out practical works in collaboration with other members of the Conservation Works Team and the Ranger Service in a professional, efficient and safe manner to further enhance and conserve the special qualities of business for the future enjoyment of all.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To work safely, ensuring all safety procedures and other controls identified by risk assessment are complied with and incidents reported promptly and appropriately.

  • To carry out general estate maintenance works on land and property owned or managed by the Authority (including public rights of way and access land) and to include: grass cutting, scrub clearance, path maintenance, leat clearance and repairs, ride management, culvert and drain cleaning and repair, erection and repair of fencing, hedging, walling and other boundaries.

  • To undertake practical conservation and access works on projects across Dartmoor, working with school groups, volunteers, Rangers and local communities as required.

  • To assist with the monitoring and maintenance of erosion sites utilising volunteers where appropriate. To report back to the Conservation Works Manager on the condition of sites.

  • To operate and undertake routine maintenance of equipment and small machinery including chainsaws, clearing saws/strimmers, mowers, track barrow and other machinery and ensure it is kept in good repair.

  • To carry out chemical weed control in a range of situations.

  • To assist with a wide variety of practical tasks, which can include; building maintenance, decorating, etc.

  • To explain and deal with on-site enquiries relating to work being undertaken, and promote the work of the Authority.

  • Provide support and advice to volunteers and other work placements to help them contribute to the work of the Conservation Works Team.

Skills and Responsibilities:

  • Experience of all aspects of site maintenance and practical management of work sites.

  • Able to use own initiative and make decisions in managing tasks and prioritisation of workload.

  • General estate maintenance.

  • Woodland management operations and land management.

  • Working with community groups and volunteers.

  • Drainage and path maintenance, tree planting, hedging, ditching, fencing, walling, vegetation management.

  • Good geographical knowledge of Dartmoor.

  • Understanding the role of National Park Authorities.

  • Ability to operate machinery and hand held power tools associated with estate maintenance.

  • Ability to undertake a wide range of practical activities.

  • Ability to work effectively alone and with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with general public/colleagues.

  • Basic ICT skills.
