We have an exciting opportunity for a Building Control Officer to join our client's offices based in Southwark on a temporary contract basis for 3 months with the possibility of an extension. The client is looking for someone to start ASAP, working full time, 36 hours per week at £18.03 p/h PAYE.

As the Building Control Officer, your main duties will include:

  • To undertake the professional duties of the service in accordance with current
  • legislation, including enforcement of the building regulations, reporting to senior building control officer on a regular basis.
  • To provide expert advice on routine building control matters to the public, builders, other outside agencies and to other Council officers being aware of the implications of that advice on the expenditure incurred as a result of the advice given.
  • To make decisions on routine building regulation matters both as part of an application and on-site, referring complex matters for advice from more senior officers or from specialists.
  • To undertake site inspections on temporary structures and report findings to the senior building control officer
  • To identify when to use measuring equipment and to use such equipment in an appropriate manner including checking the setting out of structures also recommend when to employ a specialist agency to measurements.

  • To undertake assessments of dangerous structure and emergency situations, under supervision, from time to time.
  • To assist in the implementation of initiatives to provide a quality and customer orientated building control service, including such initiatives as the development team approach, ISO 9000, best value, Towards Service Excellence/Business Excellence Model and charter mark.
  • To assist in raising customer awareness in the service through undertaking from time to time, promotional activities and public awareness activities.
  • To organise own work programme under supervision.

To be successful for this Building Control Officer post you will need to have:

  • At least 4 years proven professional experience in relevant building control disciplines with Btec (Higher) or equivalent relevant building related qualification or 2 years proven professional experience in relevant building control disciplines with a relevant degree/IBC part 2 qualification. Relevant experience includes plan checking, site inspections, assessing compliance with building regulations.
  • Experience of taking routine building control decisions and considering the consequences for the client of those decisions
  • Experience of interpreting the building regulations for routine matters and calculating fees
  • Experience of monitoring own work schedule and of maintaining clear records of own technical work and or advice is given.
  • Experience in using IT applications for building control work.
  • Knowledge of the Building Acts and Regulations as applicable to routine building control work
  • Educated to B Tec (Higher) or equivalent relevant building related qualification or relevant degree IBC part 2.
